Numismatics Archives List
In the 19th and 20th century, national banks issued currency - but only after certification by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). These proofs allowed the BEP to ensure accuracy in intaglio printing plates before currency was printed. Today the most substantial collection of these proofs resides in the National Numismatic Collection (NNC). In 2015, the NNC completed a project to digitize 270,000 Bureau of Engraving and Printing certified proofs of currency, bonds, revenue stamps, and other intaglio products. The availability of this content online allows researchers to further describe and analyze this important collection. Chris Steenerson, operating under a grant from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, has produced censes on a topical basis that provide additional insight into the NNC certified currency proofs.
