Indented engraved Promissory Notes sponsored by a group of private merchants because of the Crown’s opposition to further paper money issues by the Colony. These were payable with 1% interest on Dec. 25, 1746 in bills of credit of any New England Colony. Endorsed on the back by Hunking Wentworth for circulation. The motto is BENEFICIO COMMERCI (For the benefit of trade). On Mar. 25, 1735 in Boston 198 merchants signed a pact not to accept the notes. By the April 18, 1735 Act Massachusetts Bay prohibited their circulation there but the Crown subsequently repealed this Act. Signers were Theodore Atkinson, John Downing, Jr., George Jaffrey, Joshua Peirce, John Rindge, Henry Sherburne, Samuel Smith, and Andrew Wiggin.
